As Pakistan prepares to face India in the ICC Champions Trophy on February 23 in Dubai, former captain and head coach Moin Khan has urged Pakistani cricketers to avoid unnecessary friendliness with their Indian counterparts on the field.

“Respect the Opponent, But Maintain Boundaries”
Moin, known for his competitive spirit during his playing days, emphasized the importance of maintaining a professional demeanor in high-stakes matches. Speaking on a podcast hosted by actor Ushna Shah, he expressed his disapproval of the increasing camaraderie between Indian and Pakistani players during matches.
“I don’t understand why, during Pakistan-India matches, our players check Indian batters’ bats, pat them, and engage in casual conversations,” Moin said. “Respecting opponents is fine, but being overly friendly can be perceived as a sign of weakness.”
Lessons from the Past
Reflecting on his own career, the former wicketkeeper-batter revealed that senior players in his time advised against any unnecessary interactions with Indian cricketers during matches. “We were always told to maintain a tough stance and not to engage with the opposition. Once you become too friendly, you risk losing the psychological edge,” he added.
Although Moin acknowledged his respect for several Indian cricketers from his era, he maintained that such admiration was never displayed on the field. Even during his stint in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League, he ensured that players refrained from casual banter during matches.
Psychological Impact on Performance
According to Moin, excessive friendliness can put players under unnecessary pressure, affecting their performance. “I believe our players fail to realize that being too cordial can undermine their confidence during crucial moments,” he said.
He also admitted that Pakistan’s inability to defeat India in a World Cup match remains one of the biggest regrets for players of his generation. However, he believes both teams are strong contenders for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
As anticipation builds for the high-voltage clash between the two arch-rivals, Moin’s advice serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining focus and professionalism on the field.
