Galle, Sri Lanka – Usman Khawaja’s maiden double century propelled Australia to a dominant position on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka, reaching a formidable 475/3 at lunch on Thursday.

Khawaja’s Career-Best Performance
The 38-year-old opener displayed remarkable concentration and resilience, staying at the crease for more than seven and a half hours to register his career-best score. Surpassing his previous highest of 195* against South Africa in Sydney (2023), Khawaja reached the milestone with a sharp single to mid-off.
Resuming from his overnight score of 147, he handled Sri Lanka’s spinners with poise. Despite a few close calls—including an edge on 74 that Sri Lanka failed to review and a dropped catch on 90—he capitalized on his chances. His unbeaten 204 off 298 deliveries featured 16 boundaries and a six, showcasing his masterful stroke play.
Record-Breaking Partnership with Steve Smith
Khawaja and stand-in captain Steve Smith built a record third-wicket partnership of 266 runs, surpassing the previous best of 200 between Adam Gilchrist and Damien Martyn in Kandy (2004). Smith, who became only the 15th player in history and the fourth Australian to cross 10,000 Test runs on Day 1, contributed a well-crafted 141 off 251 balls, striking 12 fours and two sixes. His fine innings came to an end when he was trapped LBW by Jeffrey Vandersay.
Inglis Impresses on Debut
Making his Test debut, Josh Inglis made an immediate impact, scoring a fluent 44 off just 46 deliveries with five boundaries, further strengthening Australia’s dominance.
Australia in Strong Position
With Pat Cummins absent due to paternity leave, Smith is leading the Australian side. The visitors recently clinched a five-match Test series against India at home, securing their place in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s in June.
The second and final Test of the series will also take place in Galle, starting on February 6.
