MS Dhoni Features in ICC Champions Trophy Promo: “Staying Cool as a Captain Was Easy, But as a Fan… Not So Much”

January 29, 2025

With less than three weeks to go before the highly anticipated ICC Champions Trophy, former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has once again grabbed the spotlight, this time in a special promotional video for the tournament. Known for his legendary “Captain Cool” persona, Dhoni plays on his calm demeanor in an amusing Star Sports ad that highlights the intense nature of the upcoming event.

Dhoni’s Cool Demeanor Takes Center Stage

In the promo, Dhoni is seen seated in icy conditions, reinforcing his reputation for staying calm under pressure. He delivers a witty line:

“When I was the captain, remaining cool was easy. But becoming a fan and watching the ICC Champions Trophy? No.”

The ad takes a humorous turn as sheets of snow are blasted onto Dhoni, exaggerating the tension surrounding the tournament. In a nod to his famous Decision Review System (DRS) calls, he signals for a review, only to have a truck labeled “Dhoni Refrigeration System” appear, covering him in snow.

India’s History in the Champions Trophy

Dhoni led India to victory in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England, with his strategic leadership playing a crucial role in the team’s success. However, in 2017, India fell short in the final, suffering a heavy defeat. This time, with the tournament making its return after a long hiatus, India will be eager to reclaim the title.

Dhoni, however, issued a word of caution, emphasizing the unforgiving nature of the competition.

“Even though our team is strong, even if we lose one match here, we are as good as eliminated. Every match is a do-or-die.”

High Stakes for Team India

India enters the tournament under significant pressure, especially after the controversy surrounding the venue change from Pakistan to the UAE. Captain Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli will be keen to make a statement, proving they still have what it takes to dominate in the format that has suited them best over the years.

India’s campaign kicks off with a crucial clash against Bangladesh. Before that, they will face England in a three-match preparatory series, which will serve as a vital test before the main event.

With the stakes high and the competition fierce, all eyes will be on Team India as they aim to lift the coveted trophy once again.
