Mohammed Shami’s Absence Raises Questions Ahead of Rajkot T20I Against England

January 28, 2025

India pacer Mohammed Shami has yet to feature in the ongoing T20I series against England, sparking concerns and debates among fans and experts. Despite being part of the squad, Shami’s exclusion from the playing XI has raised eyebrows, with former cricketers questioning the reasoning behind the decision.

Shami’s Long Absence from International Cricket

Shami, who sustained an ankle injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup, has been out of international cricket for over a year. He made his return to competitive cricket by representing Bengal in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. However, despite being deemed fit, Shami is yet to play a single game in the T20I series.

Aakash Chopra’s Concerns

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra has expressed concern over Shami’s absence. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to provide clarity on Shami’s status.

“At some point, he has to play. The T20I series is halfway through, and we still don’t know his actual status. The dressing room and the NCA have provided no updates. If he doesn’t feature in Rajkot, I’d be genuinely worried,” said Chopra.

Fit but Not Playing

India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, confirmed that Shami is fully fit and has no injury concerns. Shami is also part of India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy. However, his absence from the playing XI has led to speculation about whether his exclusion is due to strategic decisions or other factors.

Chopra emphasized the importance of giving Shami game time before the Champions Trophy. “Shami hasn’t played for 15 months. If he’s going to be ready for international cricket, he needs to play now. Watching him in domestic matches last year doesn’t count anymore. His current form and match fitness need to be tested,” he added.

Gambhir and BCCI Under Scrutiny

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has also faced criticism for not including Shami in the playing XI. Critics argue that Shami’s experience and skills make him an indispensable asset, and keeping him on the bench raises doubts about the team’s planning and communication.

Chopra further remarked, “It’s not about the bowling combination. If Shami isn’t being picked, there needs to be a clear reason. I hope to see him play in Rajkot, or else questions about his readiness for the Champions Trophy will continue.”

The Road Ahead

With the Champions Trophy just weeks away, the pressure is mounting on the team management to provide clarity about Shami’s role. As India prepares for the third T20I in Rajkot, fans and experts alike are eager to see if the veteran pacer will finally make his much-anticipated return to the playing XI.
