Travis Head to Open for Australia in First Test Against Sri Lanka

January 28, 2025

GALLE, Sri Lanka – Travis Head has been named as Usman Khawaja’s opening partner for Australia in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, starting Wednesday. Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith confirmed the decision on the eve of the match, stating that Head’s promotion is based on his proficiency against spin and his recent performances.

Head Replaces Sam Konstas

Sam Konstas, who impressed as an opener during his debut series against India, may be shifted to the middle order to accommodate Head at the top. Smith highlighted that Head’s ability to counter spin effectively, as demonstrated during Australia’s 2023 tour of India, played a key role in the decision.

“Trav will open the innings, and beyond that, the team remains fairly stable,” Smith said in a pre-match press conference. “The selectors liked what they saw in India. He attacked the new ball, scored quickly, and immediately put pressure on the opposition. We’re hoping for a similar impact here.”

Head was instrumental in Australia’s recent success against India, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer during their 3-1 series victory to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade.

Trial by Spin in Galle

With both Tests of the series being played in Galle, Australia is bracing for spin-friendly conditions. The venue is known for offering turn from the opening session, making it a challenging setting for visiting teams.

Sri Lanka will rely heavily on their left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya to lead the attack. Meanwhile, Australia’s left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been declared fit for the match, further strengthening their spin options.

Injury Updates for Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva, recovering from a side strain, is expected to play, but opener Pathum Nissanka has been ruled out due to a groin strain.

Looking Ahead

Australia, having already secured their spot in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, will use this series as preparation for the high-stakes clash. With Head’s promotion to opener, Australia hopes to counter Sri Lanka’s spin-heavy attack and start the series on a strong note.
