Gerhard Erasmus: Namibia’s Captain Reflects on Cricketing Journey and Achievements

January 27, 2025

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus has drawn parallels between himself and Indian cricket legend Ravichandran Ashwin, calling them both “thinkers of the game.” Following a remarkable 2024 season, Erasmus has been named the ICC Men’s Associate Player of the Year for the second time, a recognition he received from ICC chairman Jay Shah.

Stellar Performances in 2024

Erasmus delivered consistently throughout the year, showcasing his prowess as both a batter and an all-rounder. He scored eight half-centuries across white-ball formats, often stepping up under pressure to guide his team. His bowling contributions were equally noteworthy, including a five-wicket haul against Nepal in Kirtipur at the start of the year.

In ODIs, Erasmus amassed 364 runs at an average of 33.09 and claimed 18 wickets at an average of 22.38 in 12 matches. In T20Is, he scored 363 runs at an average of 33.00 while taking 18 wickets at an astonishing average of 13.61 in 13 games.

Reflecting on his growth, Erasmus said, “After winning the award once, you might think you’ve achieved something, but it takes hard work to keep improving. I’ve focused on becoming a true all-rounder, ensuring my bowling matches the level of my batting, particularly in T20 cricket.”

Inspired by Legends

Erasmus credits AB de Villiers as his inspiration for batting, while as an off-spinner, he looks up to Ravichandran Ashwin. “Ashwin and I share a similar mindset. We both love analyzing the game and constantly strive to improve our skills by trying new things and viewing cricket from different perspectives,” he remarked.

Namibia’s Cricketing Growth

Under Erasmus’ leadership, Namibia has experienced significant growth, competing in three consecutive T20 World Cups (2021, 2022, and 2024). The most memorable moment came in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where Namibia stunned Sri Lanka.

However, Erasmus acknowledged the challenges his team faces in building squad depth due to Namibia’s strict laws requiring players to hold local passports. “While other associate nations benefit from expatriate players, we have a smaller selection pool, making it harder to compete at higher levels,” he explained.

He emphasized the importance of associate teams playing more matches against full-member nations to bridge the gap in skill levels and make global tournaments more competitive. “If cricket is serious about growing globally, giving associate teams more opportunities is essential. While financial considerations are involved, the long-term benefits make sense,” he added.

The Role of T20 Leagues

Erasmus expressed gratitude for global T20 leagues, such as the ILT20, which provide players from associate nations opportunities to compete against top international stars. “These leagues help us bridge the gap between World Cups. Facing world-class players regularly prepares us for the higher level of cricket,” he said.

Discussing the ILT20, where he plays for the Gulf Giants, Erasmus praised the tournament’s high standards. “It feels like playing in a World Cup due to the quality of international players. There’s no weak spot in the opposition, which makes it one of the most competitive leagues,” he concluded.

Future Aspirations

Erasmus remains optimistic about Namibia’s cricketing journey and the rising talent pool. He is determined to lead his team to greater heights while continuing to evolve as a cricketer. His focus on consistency and growth reflects his commitment to both personal and team success.
