Suryakumar Opens Up on His Relationship with Hardik Pandya
Ahead of the first T20I against England, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav spoke candidly about his relationship with all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Despite recent leadership changes, Suryakumar emphasized that Hardik remains an integral part of the team’s leadership group.

The comments from Suryakumar come shortly after Axar Patel was announced as India’s vice-captain for the five-match T20I series against England, which kicks off on January 22 in Kolkata. Fans and analysts had previously speculated that Hardik Pandya, who often stood in as captain for Rohit Sharma, would assume a formal leadership role following India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024. However, the management opted to appoint Suryakumar as the T20I skipper, with Axar Patel as his deputy.

A Strong Bond Rooted in Years of Partnership
Addressing speculation about any tension, Suryakumar praised Hardik and highlighted their shared history, especially with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. “My relationship with Hardik has always been strong. We’ve played together for a long time. I still remember when I returned to the Mumbai Indians in 2018, and the bond has been the same ever since,” Suryakumar said during a press conference.

Reflecting on his dual responsibilities as an international captain and franchise player, he added, “Having this leadership role with Team India is an added responsibility. But during the IPL, I get the chance to take a step back and relax.”

Hardik Pandya’s Role in the Leadership Group
Suryakumar clarified that Hardik remains a key figure in the team’s leadership structure despite not holding an official position. “We’ve always been good friends on the field, and we understand what we want to achieve with the team. Hardik is still an important part of the leadership discussions. When we strategize, he is actively involved, contributing both on and off the field,” Suryakumar explained.

He also commended Axar Patel for his new role, citing the all-rounder’s consistency and significant contributions during India’s T20 World Cup campaign in 2024. “Axar has been with the team for a long time and deserves this responsibility,” he said.

Praise for Head Coach Gautam Gambhir
Suryakumar expressed his admiration for head coach Gautam Gambhir, underlining the positive environment Gambhir has created in the team. “Having played under him for four years, I know how he operates. Even without verbal communication, he understands what the players need,” said the Indian skipper.

Suryakumar further elaborated on Gambhir’s approach, describing him as someone who fosters a relaxed atmosphere and encourages players to perform with freedom. “He keeps things simple, stays aware of what’s going on in a player’s mind, and ensures a light-hearted dressing room environment,” Suryakumar added.

India’s Path Forward in T20 Cricket
With new leadership dynamics and a fresh focus on team unity, Suryakumar believes India is heading in the right direction in T20 cricket. “We’re building a strong unit with clarity on our goals. Everyone is aligned, and the contributions of players like Hardik and Axar, combined with Gambhir’s guidance, are helping us move forward,” he concluded.

India’s T20 squad is set to begin their series against England with renewed energy and optimism, aiming to continue their impressive form under Suryakumar’s leadership.
