Axar Patel Highlights Flexible Middle Order Ahead of T20I Series Against England

January 20, 2025

Kolkata [India]: Ahead of the five-match T20I series against England, India’s vice-captain Axar Patel emphasized the importance of a flexible batting line-up beyond the opening pair. Speaking to reporters, Axar shared insights into the team’s approach, where middle-order batters adapt their roles based on match situations.

Axar himself has thrived in this adaptable system, being used as a floater in the batting order. His performances have significantly improved since the beginning of 2023. Previously averaging 21.26 with a strike rate of 131.25 in T20s until the end of 2022, Axar now boasts an average of 30.32 and a strike rate of 145.62.

His versatility has been evident in performances for India and IPL franchises like Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans, where he contributed crucial runs in various positions. Over the last two years, Axar has scored six half-centuries while batting at No. 3, 4, 6, and 7.

Other players, including Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, and captain Suryakumar Yadav, have also adapted to floating roles. This strategy allows the team to make quick decisions based on match-ups and game scenarios.

“Batting-wise, it’s not just about me. In 2023-24, we discussed that while the openers are fixed, players from Nos. 3 to 7 should be prepared to bat at any position depending on the situation. The middle-order players must adjust according to the type of bowlers, match-ups, and game requirements,” Axar explained.

He added, “This adaptability applies to everyone. If someone is in good touch during practice, they may be promoted to bat earlier. T20Is demand quick decision-making, and how you use your batters is critical.”

Leadership Challenges for Axar

In this series, Axar will serve as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy, adding to his responsibilities. The 31-year-old acknowledged the need to take tough decisions and work closely with the captain to ensure effective game management.

“As part of the leadership group, there’s an added responsibility. While the T20I side is relatively settled, small yet important decisions need to be made during matches. It’s essential to share honest opinions to build trust within the team,” Axar said.

He emphasized the importance of quick decision-making in the fast-paced T20 format. “The conversations with the coaches focus on how to make these decisions swiftly. Being in the leadership group means learning to handle tough calls during the game,” he added.

Preparations for England and Champions Trophy

The five-match T20I series will kick off on Wednesday at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The squad largely mirrors the team that toured South Africa in November last year. Following the T20Is, India will play a three-match ODI series to fine-tune their combinations ahead of the Champions Trophy next month.
