Rohit Sharma Explains Mohammed Siraj’s Omission from Champions Trophy Squad

January 18, 2025

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma provided a straightforward explanation for Mohammed Siraj’s exclusion from the 15-member Champions Trophy squad, which is set to kick off next month. Siraj, a key player in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup campaigns, was overlooked for the tournament due to strategic decisions regarding team composition and his effectiveness in specific match situations.

Siraj’s Role with the Old Ball a Key Factor

Rohit highlighted that Siraj’s impact diminishes when he doesn’t open the bowling, making him less suited for the team’s plans in Dubai, where the conditions may not favor fast bowlers. “Siraj’s effectiveness comes down a little bit if he’s not using the new ball. We discussed this in detail, and since we’re only taking three seamers to the tournament, we had to prioritize players who could perform specific roles,” Rohit said during a press conference.

Expressing sympathy for Siraj, Rohit called his omission “unfortunate” but explained that the decision was necessary to balance the squad with all-rounders.

India Opts for Three Pacers in Dubai Conditions

With Dubai’s pitches expected to favor spinners and all-rounders, the Indian selectors chose Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh as the specialist pacers. Bumrah, still recovering from a back injury, retained his spot, while Shami was recalled after a strong showing in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Arshdeep was selected for his consistency in death overs, a critical area where Siraj’s performance has seen a dip.

Confidence in Arshdeep Singh

Rohit expressed faith in Arshdeep’s ability to step up despite limited experience in ODIs. “Arshdeep hasn’t played many ODIs, but he’s been a regular in white-ball cricket for some time now. He has delivered in high-pressure situations, particularly in T20Is, and we’re confident he can handle similar responsibilities in the ODIs,” Rohit explained.

The Indian skipper also praised Shami’s contributions, calling him a stalwart of white-ball cricket. “What Shami did during the ODI World Cup was phenomenal. Having players like him in the squad gives us confidence going into the Champions Trophy,” he added.

Tough Calls for Team Balance

The decision to exclude Siraj underscores the tough choices required to craft a balanced team for a high-stakes tournament. With a focus on adaptability and role clarity, India’s squad aims to tackle the unique challenges of the Champions Trophy.
