BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar has provided an update on Jasprit Bumrah’s injury status, confirming the star pacer will miss the first two ODIs against England in the upcoming three-match series. Despite being included in the squad for both the England ODIs and the Champions Trophy, Bumrah’s participation remains uncertain due to a back spasm sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Bumrah’s Injury and Recovery Plan
Bumrah’s injury, which flared up during the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has raised concerns about his workload management. Agarkar revealed that the medical team has advised the 31-year-old to reduce his workload for at least five weeks. “The physio has suggested a break, and Bumrah will be re-evaluated in early February,” Agarkar stated during a press conference.
Although Bumrah’s absence from the first two ODIs is confirmed, there is optimism about his recovery in time for the Champions Trophy, which starts on February 19. “The medical team is monitoring his progress, and we are hopeful he will be match-fit soon,” Agarkar added.
Focus on Fitness Assessment
While Agarkar refrained from sharing detailed specifics about Bumrah’s condition, he emphasized that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would issue updates based on the medical team’s findings. “It’s better that the medical department explains his situation rather than me speculating. We’re expecting more clarity in early February,” Agarkar said.
Bumrah, known for his match-winning performances, was a key contributor during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and remains vital to India’s plans for the Champions Trophy.
Siraj Misses Out as India Finalizes Champions Trophy Squad
In a significant decision, Mohammed Siraj, who featured in both the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup squads, has not been included in the Champions Trophy squad. India has opted for Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh as the primary pacers, with Harshit Rana joining only for the England series.
The bilateral ODI series against England, scheduled for February 6, 9, and 12, will serve as India’s first 50-over matches since their Sri Lanka tour in August 2024. These matches are crucial as India fine-tunes its preparations for the Champions Trophy.
India’s Strategic Bowling Choices
Agarkar reiterated the team’s focus on ensuring a balanced bowling attack for the Champions Trophy. “With Bumrah’s fitness being monitored, Shami and Arshdeep have been picked for their ability to deliver in key phases of the game,” he explained.
The Indian team management will be closely observing Bumrah’s recovery process, hoping for a green signal from the medical team ahead of the marquee ICC tournament.
