Shami Returns, Jaiswal Earns Maiden ODI Call-Up
Mumbai – Premier Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been named in the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy (CT), although his participation hinges on his fitness. Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has received his maiden ODI call-up, while seasoned fast bowler Mohammed Shami makes his return to the national team.

Bumrah, who experienced back spasms during the Sydney Test against Australia, did not bowl on the final day of the match. Despite this, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee included the 31-year-old pacer in the squads for both the England ODIs and the marquee ICC event, beginning February 19.
Gill Appointed Vice-Captain; Siraj Misses Out
Top-order batter Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain of the squad, while pacer Mohammed Siraj has been excluded. Rohit Sharma, who will lead the team, clarified the decision to include Bumrah despite his uncertain fitness status.
“Experience matters. With Siraj not being included, we considered a combination of bowlers for both new-ball and death-over roles. Bumrah’s presence, even with fitness doubts, adds depth to our squad,” said Rohit during the squad announcement.
Shami and Arshdeep to Shoulder the Bowling Load
Rohit expressed confidence in Shami and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh stepping up if Bumrah is unable to play.
“Shami has shown excellent form in domestic matches and brings invaluable experience with the new ball. Arshdeep, while relatively new to ODIs, has performed under pressure in white-ball cricket and is capable of handling key moments,” Rohit noted.
Siraj’s absence was termed unfortunate, with his reduced effectiveness with the old ball being a deciding factor. “We needed bowlers who can perform specific roles. Siraj’s skillset didn’t align with the requirements for this tournament,” Rohit explained.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Selection: A Vote of Confidence in Potential
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s inclusion in the ODI squad was based on his impressive performances over the past few months. Despite not having played an ODI, the selectors viewed his potential as an asset.
“Jaiswal’s recent form and his ability as a left-handed batter give us variety at the top. His potential is undeniable,” Rohit emphasized.
Return of Key Players and All-Rounders in Focus
All-rounder Harshit Rana, who made his Test debut in Australia, has been included for the three-match ODI series against England. Meanwhile, wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav returns to the squad after recovering from a groin injury.
India’s all-rounder lineup for the Champions Trophy includes Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. Hardik, who missed part of the 2023 World Cup due to an ankle injury, is expected to play a key role.
Pant Named First-Choice Wicketkeeper
Rishabh Pant, who has played just one ODI in the last two years since recovering from his accident, has been selected as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter. KL Rahul will serve as his backup. Sanju Samson, despite strong performances against South Africa, missed out due to not attending Kerala’s Vijay Hazare Trophy camp.
Unlucky Omissions
Karun Nair, despite scoring 752 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, was not included due to the lack of available slots. “Selection is tough, and not everyone can be accommodated. The squad is chosen to provide balance and adaptability,” Rohit stated.
