Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is set to reach out to Team India captain Rohit Sharma to confirm his availability for the upcoming Ranji Trophy clash against Jammu and Kashmir. The MCA’s decision comes amid ongoing uncertainty over the skipper’s participation, with no official confirmation from Rohit thus far.

Rohit Sharma’s Recent Struggles and Domestic Cricket Push
Rohit Sharma, who has faced criticism for his inconsistent performances during India’s recent Test series against New Zealand and Australia, is under pressure to regain his form. The 37-year-old managed only 31 runs in three matches against Australia and opted to sit out the final Test in Sydney.
Determined to bounce back, Rohit has resumed training at the Wankhede Stadium alongside Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane and is expected to return to full-fledged practice soon. His potential participation in the Ranji Trophy has become a talking point, with MCA officials planning to consult him before finalizing the squad, which will be announced on January 20.
“We will follow the due process and confirm the availability of all players before announcing the squad. Rohit will also be approached during this period,” an MCA official told PTI.
Gautam Gambhir Advocates for Domestic Cricket Participation
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasized the importance of domestic cricket for maintaining the standard of the red-ball game. He has urged all players, including senior members, to prioritize participation in domestic matches.
“I believe everyone should play domestic cricket if they are available. It reflects their commitment to the red-ball format. Without giving importance to domestic cricket, you can’t develop the players you need,” Gambhir stated.
Young Stars Commit to Ranji Matches
While Rohit’s participation remains uncertain, several young Indian players have confirmed their availability for the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches.
- Yashasvi Jaiswal, who impressed during the Australian tour, will represent Mumbai in their match against Jammu and Kashmir.
- Shubman Gill, who scored 93 runs in five innings Down Under, will feature in Punjab’s game against Karnataka in Bengaluru.
- Rishabh Pant, known for his aggressive style, will play for Delhi against Saurashtra. This will mark Pant’s return to the Ranji Trophy after a gap since the 2017-2018 season.
As the Ranji Trophy serves as a crucial platform for players to showcase their skills, all eyes are now on Rohit Sharma’s decision. His participation could not only help Mumbai but also offer him a chance to regain his form ahead of future international commitments.
