Shami Reflects on Challenges of Missing International Cricket
Mohammed Shami, one of India’s premier fast bowlers, has spoken about the emotional toll of being away from the national team. Shami has been out of action on the international stage, with his absence keenly felt during India’s recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy defeat. As fans hope for his return ahead of the Champions Trophy, Shami has admitted that the wait has been agonizing.

“For a cricketer, playing is everything. The ball is my life. How can I enjoy life if I can’t hold the ball in my hands? Life has become very difficult—there’s nothing more to say,” Shami told Anandabazar Patrika.

Setbacks and Domestic Comeback
Shami’s planned return during India’s tour of Australia was derailed due to swelling in his knee, forcing him to miss the series, which India ultimately lost 3-1. Despite this setback, the pacer has been actively representing Bengal in domestic cricket, participating in various formats to stay match-fit.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shami played a crucial role for Bengal, taking three wickets in a knockout game against Haryana. Reflecting on his journey, Shami said, “I always believed that when I play again, I will give my best. Honesty towards the game has always been my priority, and no matter the challenges, I’ve never compromised on my efforts.”

The Indian Jersey: A Source of Motivation
Shami revealed that the sight of the Indian jersey kept him motivated throughout his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. “What greater motivation is there than playing for the country? During my recovery at the NCA, just looking at the Indian jersey was enough to inspire me. I never needed anything else to keep me going,” he said.

Hopes for a Strong Return
At 34, Shami remains determined to make a significant comeback and contribute to Team India’s success. His unwavering commitment and recent domestic performances indicate that he is on the path to reclaiming his place in the national squad. Fans and teammates alike are eager to see him back in action as India gears up for the Champions Trophy and other crucial tournaments ahead.
