Varun Chakaravarthy’s Champions Trophy Case Gains Momentum: Aakash Chopra Weighs In

January 11, 2025

Varun Chakaravarthy’s impressive performances in white-ball cricket have fueled speculation about his inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra added weight to these rumors, discussing the potential impact of Chakaravarthy’s selection on the team composition, particularly concerning veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Stellar Performances Elevate Chakaravarthy’s Chances

Chakaravarthy has yet to debut in ODIs but has built a strong case with consistent displays in T20Is and domestic cricket. In 2024, he featured in seven T20Is, picking up 17 wickets with a stellar strike rate of 9.8. His current form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy is equally impressive, where he leads the wicket-taking charts with 18 scalps in six matches at a strike rate of 13.89, including a five-wicket haul against Rajasthan.

Praising Chakaravarthy’s performances, Chopra noted, “Varun Chakaravarthy has been outstanding, consistently taking wickets. His form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and his return to the Indian T20I team have further strengthened his case for a spot in the Champions Trophy.”

Jadeja’s Spot Under Threat?

Chopra also addressed swirling rumors that Chakaravarthy’s potential selection could come at the expense of Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja, who retired from T20Is, has not played ODIs since the 2023 World Cup and was left out of India’s last ODI series against Sri Lanka.

“The rumor mill suggests that if Varun Chakaravarthy is picked for the Champions Trophy, Ravindra Jadeja might lose his place. While it’s unsettling to hear, such a possibility is being discussed,” Chopra revealed on his YouTube channel.

Axar Patel Favored Over Jadeja

Chopra predicted that Axar Patel could replace Jadeja in the squad, given Axar’s all-round capabilities as a left-arm spinner. He emphasized that Axar’s recent form and fitness make him a strong candidate for the role.

“It seems likely that Axar Patel will take Jadeja’s spot as the spin-bowling all-rounder. With Chakaravarthy’s rise, Jadeja’s place in the XI is uncertain, and we might see Axar stepping in,” Chopra observed.

A Bold Move on the Horizon?

If Chakaravarthy earns a place in the Champions Trophy squad, it will mark a significant shift in India’s strategy, favoring form over experience. While the decision to potentially omit Jadeja could spark debate, the selectors appear focused on rewarding consistent performances like Chakaravarthy’s.

As the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy takes shape, the inclusion of Chakaravarthy could signal a new direction for India’s bowling attack in the 50-over format. Fans and analysts alike await the final squad announcement with great anticipation.
