Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has voiced his disappointment over Cricket Australia’s (CA) decision to exclude Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar from the presentation of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, calling it a missed opportunity to honor both icons of the game.

The issue arose after Australia clinched the fiercely contested Border-Gavaskar series, and Allan Border alone presented the trophy to Australian captain Pat Cummins at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Gavaskar, whose name also adorns the trophy, was present but relegated to the sidelines, a decision that has sparked widespread criticism.
Speaking to ESPN Australia, Clarke questioned the logic behind CA’s approach.
“A Missed Opportunity”
“I think Cricket Australia really missed a trick here,” Clarke said. “From what I understand, it was predetermined before the series that if India won, Sunil Gavaskar would present the trophy, and if Australia won, Allan Border would do the honors. So this wasn’t a last-minute decision.”
However, Clarke believes the situation could have been handled differently. “It just doesn’t make sense to me. Both legends were present. Regardless of which team won, they should have shared the stage and jointly presented the trophy. That would have been the ideal scenario.”
Gavaskar Expresses Disappointment
Sunil Gavaskar, who has often been described as a towering figure in cricketing history, didn’t hide his displeasure over the incident. In an interview with Code Sports, Gavaskar said, “The fact that Australia won should not have impacted the presentation. They played better cricket and deserved to win. I would have been happy to present the trophy alongside my good friend Allan Border.”
Clarke echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of having both legends present for the ceremony. “We were fortunate to have both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar in the country at the same time, commentating on the series. That’s a rare privilege,” Clarke said.
A Missed Chance to Celebrate Two Legends
Clarke further argued that CA’s decision not only offended Gavaskar but also deprived fans of witnessing a moment of respect and camaraderie between two legends. “Sunny was obviously upset, and I understand why. This was a chance to celebrate both legends who have left an indelible mark on cricket. It feels like a real missed opportunity.”
Conclusion
While the series itself provided high drama and thrilling cricket, the trophy presentation has left a bitter aftertaste for many fans and cricketing personalities. As Clarke pointed out, “It’s rare to have both namesakes of the trophy present in the same place. Both deserved to be on that stage, regardless of the outcome.”
Cricket Australia is yet to address the criticism publicly, but the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring legends, especially when the opportunity is right in front of us.
