Mohammed Shami Sends Strong Message to Selectors as Bumrah’s Fitness Concerns Loom Over Champions Trophy

January 8, 2025

Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who missed out on selection for the Test squad in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is determined to make his mark in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, starting on February 19. With the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee expected to finalize India’s provisional squad by January 12, Shami has showcased his readiness for international cricket through an intense practice session video, delivering a clear message to the selectors.

In his video, Shami emphasized his commitment to the game, captioning it: “Precision, Pace, and Passion, All Set to Take on the World!” This declaration reflects his eagerness to return to the national team following his consistent performances in domestic cricket across all formats.

Bumrah’s Fitness Concerns Add Urgency to Shami’s Selection

Meanwhile, concerns over Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness have intensified after he suffered back spasms during the second day of the Sydney Test against Australia. Following the injury, Bumrah was taken for scans and did not take the field for the remainder of the match. Three days after Australia’s series-clinching win at the SCG, the BCCI medical team has yet to issue an official statement on the extent of his injury.

Reports suggest that if Bumrah’s injury is categorized as Grade 1, he could require two to three weeks of rehabilitation. However, a Grade 2 injury may extend his recovery period to six weeks, while a Grade 3 injury would demand a minimum of three months of rest and rehabilitation. This uncertainty has raised questions about Bumrah’s availability for the Champions Trophy.

Shami’s Role Becomes Crucial

Given the potential absence of Bumrah, the selectors may lean on Shami for the marquee tournament. However, they are likely to test his readiness in the upcoming ODI series at home against England before making a final decision. Shami’s inclusion in that series could provide the selectors and team management with an opportunity to evaluate his form and fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy.

ICC Rules on Squad Changes

While the final squad submission deadline for the Champions Trophy is January 12, the ICC permits teams to make changes to their provisional squads up until February 13. This window offers India some flexibility as they await further updates on Bumrah’s recovery and assess Shami’s performance.

With the Champions Trophy fast approaching, Shami’s determination and Bumrah’s uncertain fitness could play a pivotal role in shaping India’s pace attack for the tournament.
