In the second Test at Newlands, Cape Town, makeshift opener Ryan Rickelton’s career-best unbeaten 213 has steered South Africa to a commanding 429 for five at lunch on day two against Pakistan.

Elevated to the opening position due to Tony de Zorzi’s injury, the 28-year-old left-hander resumed play on 176 and reached his double century, showcasing remarkable resilience against Pakistan’s bowling attack.
Rickelton’s partnership with Kyle Verreynne has been particularly fruitful, with Verreynne racing to 74 off 88 balls. Their sixth-wicket stand has added 106 runs in just over 23 overs, further consolidating South Africa’s strong position.
Earlier in the session, Pakistan managed to dismiss David Bedingham for five, caught behind off Mohammad Abbas, marking wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan’s fifth catch of the innings.
The pitch at Newlands has so far favored the batsmen, but with the hot conditions, it is expected to deteriorate as the match progresses, potentially offering more assistance to the bowlers.
Pakistan faces additional challenges with the loss of in-form opener Saim Ayub, who sustained an ankle fracture while fielding on the first day. This injury limits Pakistan to nine wickets in each of their batting innings and sidelines Ayub for approximately six weeks, putting his participation in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in doubt.
South Africa, having already secured a spot in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June, are aiming for a 2-0 series sweep following their narrow two-wicket victory in the first Test in Pretoria.
