Ahmedabad: Mumbai’s rising star Ayush Mhatre etched his name in the record books on Tuesday by becoming the youngest player to score 150 runs in List A cricket. The milestone came during a Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Nagaland, where Mhatre’s remarkable knock broke the previous record held by Yashasvi Jaiswal.

At just 17 years and 168 days old, Mhatre surpassed Jaiswal, who achieved the feat at 17 years and 291 days while playing for Mumbai against Jharkhand in 2019. Mhatre’s explosive innings of 181 off just 117 balls featured 15 fours and 11 sixes, propelling Mumbai to a formidable total of 403/7 in their 50 overs.
A Rising Talent from Mumbai
Hailing from the Virar suburb in Mumbai, Mhatre has been an integral part of the domestic powerhouse’s squad across formats since making his debut earlier this season. The young batter was also a member of the Mumbai team that clinched the Irani Cup in October, ending a 27-year drought by defeating Rest of India.
Consistency Across Formats
Mhatre’s domestic debut was promising, as he scored 52 runs off 71 balls in a Ranji Trophy match against Baroda, although Mumbai lost the season opener. However, he made headlines with a commanding 176 off 232 balls against Maharashtra, a knock studded with 22 fours and four sixes, leading Mumbai to a nine-wicket victory.
While he had subdued performances against Tripura and Odisha, Mhatre bounced back with his second first-class century, scoring 116 off 149 balls with 12 fours and three sixes against Services. His performances earned him a spot in the India U-19 squad for the Asia Cup, where he contributed with fifties against Japan and UAE, although he fell cheaply in the final, which India lost to Bangladesh.
Vijay Hazare Trophy Heroics
After missing out on Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy-winning campaign, Mhatre returned to List A cricket with a composed 78 against Karnataka in a high-scoring match. However, it was his record-breaking 181 against Nagaland that firmly established his credentials as one of India’s brightest batting talents.
A Star in the Making
Mhatre’s journey so far highlights his ability to adapt across formats and deliver in critical moments. As he continues to perform at the domestic level, the young batter is undoubtedly a name to watch out for in the future of Indian cricket.
