India captain Rohit Sharma has faced sharp criticism for allegedly undermining the team’s confidence following their victory in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has accused the 37-year-old of making decisions that disrupted the team’s rhythm, including his controversial return to the opener’s role in the fourth Test against Australia in Melbourne.

Rohit’s Struggles as an Opener
Rohit Sharma, who missed the series opener due to the birth of his second child, initially opted to bat at No. 6 in the second and third Tests after KL Rahul’s impressive showing as an opener in Perth. However, after struggling with the bat in Adelaide and Brisbane, Rohit reinstated himself as an opener in Melbourne, pushing Rahul to No. 3 and leaving Shubman Gill out of the playing XI.
The move backfired, as Rohit managed only 3 and 9 in his two innings in Melbourne, further dropping his series average to a dismal 6.20—the lowest ever recorded by a touring captain in Australia.
Basit Ali’s Criticism
Basit Ali, speaking on his YouTube channel, expressed his disappointment with Rohit’s decision to return as an opener. He claimed the move disrupted the team’s momentum and shattered their confidence.
“After the win in Perth, did India become overconfident? Rohit decided to open again, despite not being in form. KL Rahul, who was performing well, was placed under unnecessary pressure, and the team’s confidence was completely shattered,” said Basit.
Calls for Leadership Change
The former Pakistan cricketer went further, suggesting that Rohit should step down as captain for the final Test in Sydney. Basit proposed that Jasprit Bumrah, who had successfully led India to victory in Perth, should take over the captaincy.
“I believe it’s time for Rohit to relinquish the captaincy. Bumrah should lead the side in the last Test. Rohit has served Indian cricket well, but his body isn’t supporting him anymore,” Basit added.
A Testing Time for Team India
Rohit’s decisions and poor form have come under scrutiny as India looks to bounce back in the final Test. With the series hanging in the balance, the team faces the challenge of rebuilding its confidence and maintaining its focus for the crucial encounter in Sydney.
