Australia’s pacer Scott Boland has confirmed that Mitchell Starc will continue playing in the ongoing Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) despite experiencing a minor fitness issue. Starc encountered discomfort while bowling during Day 3, sparking concerns about Australia’s already depleted bowling attack due to Josh Hazlewood’s absence from the series because of a side strain.

In a post-day press conference, Boland clarified the situation, saying, “He’s okay. He had a bit of a niggle somewhere in his back or rib area, I’m not exactly sure, but he came back after the break and was bowling at 140km/h, so I think he’s fine.”
Starc’s Resilience Amidst Challenges
Mitchell Starc has so far delivered 25 overs in the match but has yet to claim a wicket due to the pitch’s lack of assistance for swing bowlers. Despite this, Boland lauded Starc’s resilience and toughness, recalling an impressive display of grit during a previous match at the MCG.
“A couple of years ago, he had a broken finger, and we were preparing for him not to bowl at all. But then, he came out and bowled 140km/h swingers. I think he’s underrated for how tough he is,” Boland shared.
Starc’s Ability to Play Through Pain
Boland emphasized that Starc’s ability to perform at a high level despite physical discomfort sets him apart as a fast bowler.
“He’s played close to 90 Test matches now, and as a fast bowler, it’s rare to play without any niggle at all. He’s someone who can still bowl at the same pace even when he’s really sore, which is an incredible trait,” Boland remarked.
Australia in a Commanding Position Despite Rain
Despite a rain-hit Day 3, Australia maintains control in the match, holding a lead of 116 runs. India’s Nitish Kumar Reddy showcased an outstanding effort, scoring his maiden century and helping India reach 358 for nine before rain forced an early close to the day’s play.
As the game progresses, Starc’s fitness and determination will be crucial for Australia as they aim to secure a series victory.
