Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah shared insights into his intriguing battle with Australian debutant Sam Konstas during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Despite being struck for two sixes by the 19-year-old early in the match, Bumrah maintained that he was always in control and close to taking Konstas’ wicket.

Bumrah’s Take on the Challenge
Speaking to the host broadcaster on Day 3, Bumrah admitted that Konstas’ aggressive style didn’t catch him off guard, thanks to his years of experience in T20 cricket. “I’ve faced similar situations countless times. Having played T20 cricket for over a decade, I’m accustomed to batsmen trying to take me on,” Bumrah said.
Reflecting on the early exchanges, he added, “I felt I was always in the game. In fact, I thought I could have dismissed him six or seven times within the first two overs. But that’s cricket—sometimes bold approaches work, and sometimes they don’t. I enjoy challenges like this and always look forward to such encounters.”
Konstas’ Aggressive Counterattack
Konstas began his innings cautiously, often beaten by Bumrah’s precision and movement. However, he shifted gears quickly, adopting an unorthodox approach that caught the Indian bowlers off guard. The young Australian ramped Bumrah for two towering sixes, signaling his intent to dominate.
Konstas didn’t stop there, compiling a brisk 60 off just 65 deliveries. His fearless stroke play set the tone for Australia’s commanding first innings total of 474. This explosive start laid a strong foundation, allowing seasoned campaigners like Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith to pile on the pressure with significant contributions.
India Struggles but Finds a Hero
In response, India found themselves in trouble at 164/5, with Yashasvi Jaiswal standing tall amid the collapse with a gritty 82. On Day 3, Nitish Kumar Reddy’s maiden Test century provided India with much-needed hope, steering them past the follow-on mark and keeping their chances alive in the match.
A Test of Skill and Nerves
The duel between Bumrah and Konstas exemplified the beauty of Test cricket—a battle of skill, strategy, and temperament. While Konstas’ fearless approach paid dividends for Australia, Bumrah’s composure and readiness to adapt showcased why he remains one of the world’s premier fast bowlers.
