Vadodara: A resurgent Renuka Singh Thakur delivered a sensational performance in the first women’s ODI against the West Indies, claiming a five-wicket haul and propelling India to a commanding 211-run victory on Sunday. Her career-best 5/29 ended India’s long wait for a pacer to take five wickets in an ODI—last achieved by Jhulan Goswami in 2011.

Guidance from a Legend and a Stellar Comeback
Thakur credited legendary Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami for valuable advice that helped her refine her skills ahead of the match. “I’ve been playing a lot of T20s recently, but ODIs demand a different approach. Jhulan di advised me to focus on consistency and bowl in the same spot, which proved effective,” shared Thakur, who was named Player of the Match.
Returning after battling a stress injury that sidelined her since the Women’s Premier League in 2023, Thakur highlighted the importance of her improved fitness. “Fitness has been a priority, and I’m happy to have bowled eight overs on the trot. It was proof of my progress,” she said.
India Posts a Mammoth Total
Batting first, India put up an imposing 314/9, with significant contributions from all top six batters. The challenging target left the visitors needing a miracle from key players like Deandra Dottin and captain Hayley Matthews.
Thakur’s Lethal Spell Breaks Windies Resistance
Thakur’s devastating opening spell dismantled West Indies’ top order, leaving them reeling at 11/4 and 26/5. Bowling with precision and exploiting favorable pitch conditions, she clean-bowled Dottin in a decisive moment that effectively sealed the match. Matthews, along with opener Qiana Joseph, was dismissed early, and the visitors never recovered from the early collapse.
Thakur’s inswingers, particularly effective with the new ball, proved instrumental in exploiting the pitch conditions. She later noted that the team’s plan to bowl stump to stump paid off, aided by some helpful patches on the surface and cooler evening temperatures that brought dew into play.
Leading the Pack Ahead of the World Cup
Thakur’s performance has reinstated her as a key figure in India’s bowling lineup, especially in the absence of experienced players like Pooja Vastrakar. Over the past year, she has taken 12 wickets in 10 ODIs and 22 in 29 T20Is, establishing herself as a consistent wicket-taker.
With emerging talents like Saima Thakor and Titas Sadhu joining the side, Thakur is expected to lead the attack as India prepares for the ODI World Cup scheduled for September-October next year.
Renuka Thakur’s remarkable comeback not only showcased her resilience but also reaffirmed her importance to Indian cricket as they gear up for a crucial season.
