Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, 52, is showing signs of recovery after being hospitalized due to brain clots. Currently under care at Akruti Hospital in Thane, Kambli expressed heartfelt gratitude to the doctors who are tirelessly working to stabilize his health.

Kambli’s Health Scare and Emotional Statement
Kambli’s health took a turn for the worse on Saturday night when he experienced severe cramps, fever, dizziness, and drowsiness. Speaking from his hospital bed, Kambli shared an emotional moment, holding his doctor’s hand and saying, “I am alive because of the doctors here. I will do whatever sir (the doctor) asks me to. People will soon see the inspiration I aim to provide.”
His recovery journey began after a series of tests revealed a urinary tract infection, electrolyte imbalance, and low sodium and potassium levels as the primary causes of his condition. According to Dr. Vivek Dwivedi, who is overseeing his treatment, antibiotics and other necessary measures were promptly administered.
Support from Fans and Doctors
Brought to the hospital by a fan, Kambli has received unwavering support from the hospital staff, led by in-charge S. Singh. Singh has assured Kambli of life-long free treatment, highlighting the goodwill surrounding the former cricketer.
Although Kambli’s condition remains delicate, he has shown remarkable improvement, greeting doctors and fans with a smile and acknowledging their good wishes.
A Struggle with Health and Finances
Kambli’s health has been a concern for several months. He previously faced difficulty walking during a public appearance at the unveiling of the Ramakant Achrekar memorial in Mumbai. Additionally, he revealed that he had been admitted to three hospitals last month due to a severe urinary infection.
Beyond health challenges, Kambli has faced financial difficulties, relying on a ₹30,000 monthly pension from the BCCI. Members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, including Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, have offered assistance on the condition that Kambli agrees to rehabilitation. If accepted, this would mark his 15th attempt at rehabilitation.
A Career of Highs and Lows
Kambli made his international debut in 1991 and gained prominence in 1994 with back-to-back double centuries in Tests—224 against England and 227 against Zimbabwe. Despite his talent, his career was marred by indiscipline and a penchant for the glamorous lifestyle, leading to his final Test appearance in 1995 and the end of his ODI career by 2000 at just 28 years old.
After retiring from domestic cricket in 2009, Kambli dabbled in acting and reality shows, but these ventures were short-lived. Strained relations with childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar also became a topic of discussion when Kambli suggested Tendulkar could have helped him navigate his challenges. However, Tendulkar stepped in to cover Kambli’s medical expenses during surgeries for two heart attacks in 2013.
The Road Ahead
As Kambli continues his recovery, he remains optimistic about turning his life around. His gratitude to the medical staff and the support he has received underline his resolve to inspire others. This chapter may mark a new beginning for the former star, both in health and life.
