Rohit Sharma Explains Tanush Kotian’s Selection as Ashwin’s Replacement

December 24, 2024

Mumbai’s off-spin all-rounder Tanush Kotian has been named Ravichandran Ashwin’s replacement in India’s squad for the fourth and fifth Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The decision came after Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket following the third Test in Brisbane. While India had options like Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, Kotian was ultimately chosen. Captain Rohit Sharma shed light on the reasons behind this selection.

Kotian’s Quick Availability and Consistent Performance

Speaking to the media, Rohit humorously mentioned that Kotian’s selection was partly due to logistical reasons. “Tanush was here a month back, and Kuldeep didn’t have a visa,” Rohit joked. However, he quickly added a more serious note, highlighting Kotian’s recent performances and readiness to join the squad immediately.

“Tanush has been doing well over the past two years. He was part of the ‘A’ tour in Australia before the series began, where he scored 44 runs and picked up a wicket in his only appearance. With Ashwin retiring, we needed someone ready to step in, especially as a backup for playing two spinners in Sydney or Melbourne. Tanush fits that role perfectly,” Rohit explained.

Kotian’s first-class record speaks for itself. In 33 matches, he has taken 101 wickets at an average of 25.70 and scored 1525 runs at 41.21, including two centuries and 13 fifties. His all-round capabilities were instrumental in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy victory last season.

Why Kuldeep and Axar Were Unavailable

Rohit also addressed why other potential replacements like Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel were not considered. Kuldeep recently underwent hernia surgery and is not yet fully fit, while Axar was unavailable due to the birth of his child.

“Kuldeep is still recovering from surgery and isn’t 100 percent fit. Axar recently became a father, so traveling was not an option for him. Given these circumstances, Tanush was the best choice. He played a key role in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy win, and we are confident he can contribute effectively,” Rohit said.

Kotian to Join the Squad

Kotian, who is currently competing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, is expected to join the Indian squad on Tuesday to prepare for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests. With his strong domestic performances and prior experience in Australia, he brings valuable depth to the Indian bowling lineup as they aim to close out the series.
