Australia moved one step closer to clinching their third consecutive ICC Women’s Championship title after a commanding 65-run victory (via DLS method) over New Zealand in the second ODI on Saturday. The win elevated Australia to 37 points in the standings, solidifying their position at the top.

India’s Slim Title Hopes
India, currently second with 25 points, remains the only team that can mathematically surpass Australia. However, for that to happen, India must win all six of their remaining matches—three against West Indies and three against Ireland. Additionally, New Zealand would need to defeat Australia in the final ODI of the series. A tie or draw in any match would confirm Australia’s triumph, making it their third consecutive championship title and extending their dominance in the tournament’s history.
Sutherland Leads the Charge for Australia
Annabel Sutherland shone once again, following up her century against India with another stellar performance. Remaining unbeaten on 105 off 81 balls, she smashed 11 boundaries and two sixes, anchoring Australia to a formidable total of 291/7. Contributions from skipper Alyssa Healy, Tahlia McGrath, and Ellyse Perry further bolstered the innings.
New Zealand’s Molly Penfold recorded career-best figures of 4/42, but her efforts were insufficient to contain the Australian batters.
Dominant Bowling Sets Up Victory
Australia’s bowlers made an immediate impact, with Kim Garth dismissing openers Suzie Bates and Bella Jones during the Powerplay. Although Melie Kerr fought back with a steady 38 off 55 balls, her efforts were undone as New Zealand lost Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday in quick succession. Kerr’s dismissal in the 28th over left the White Ferns struggling at 122/5, well short of the DLS-par score when rain interrupted play.
Victory by DLS Method
With no further play possible due to persistent rain, Australia was awarded the match via the DLS method, securing a 1-0 series lead. The final ODI of the series is scheduled for Monday, where Australia will look to seal their dominance.
Historic Dominance in the ICC Women’s Championship
If Australia secures the title, it will mark their third consecutive championship victory since the tournament’s inception, further cementing their legacy as the most dominant side in women’s cricket.
