Ahmed Shehzad Proposes Border Stadium for India-Pakistan Cricket Matches Amid ICC’s Hybrid Model Decision

December 21, 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently introduced a hybrid hosting model to address the challenges surrounding India and Pakistan matches in ICC tournaments. This decision comes in light of India’s unwillingness to travel to Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy in 2025 due to ongoing diplomatic tensions. The model was also approved by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). As per the ICC’s new plan, all matches between the two nations during ICC events in the 2024-27 cycle will take place at neutral venues.

Ahmed Shehzad’s Views on the Hybrid Model

Sharing his thoughts on the ICC’s decision, Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad expressed disappointment, calling it a missed opportunity for Pakistan to host India. In a YouTube interview, Shehzad stated, “Pakistan had a golden chance to host India. The agreement signed in 2021 clearly stated that Pakistan would host the Champions Trophy. The ICC backing out of this now is unfair. The PCB has lost the chance to bring the Indian team here through an ICC event. It’s safe to assume that India will not tour Pakistan in the future.”

The “Border Stadium” Idea

Shehzad also floated an unconventional solution for hosting India-Pakistan matches—building a stadium at the border of the two countries. Explaining his concept, he said, “I suggested constructing a stadium at the border, with one gate opening into India and the other into Pakistan. Players could enter from their respective sides to play the match. However, even with such an arrangement, issues would arise. The Indian players might still need visas when stepping onto the Pakistani side of the field, which their government may not grant.”

The India-Pakistan Rivalry

Pakistan, the defending Champions Trophy winners, secured a memorable victory over India in the 2017 final. The two teams have faced each other five times in the tournament, with Pakistan holding a 3-2 edge in their head-to-head record. Their most recent encounter took place during the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup, where India claimed a narrow six-run win before going on to lift the trophy.

While the ICC’s hybrid model offers a practical solution to the diplomatic impasse, Shehzad’s proposal highlights the longing among fans and players alike for a seamless return of India-Pakistan cricketing ties.
