Harbhajan Singh Clears the Air on Rumored Rift with Ravichandran Ashwin

December 21, 2024

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has addressed long-standing rumors about a supposed rift with Ravichandran Ashwin, dismissing them as baseless. His remarks come in the wake of Ashwin’s retirement from international cricket after the Gabba Test against Australia.

Ashwin, one of India’s greatest match-winners, concluded his illustrious career as the country’s second-highest wicket-taker across all formats, behind Anil Kumble. His remarkable record includes 11 Player of the Series awards in Test cricket—more than any other male cricketer.

Harbhajan Denies Rift Rumors

Addressing speculation about discord between the two legendary spinners, Harbhajan clarified that there has never been any animosity. “I only engage with social media as much as necessary. If there were ever a disagreement or misunderstanding between Ashwin and me, I would address it directly with him,” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel.

“It has never been like this, and it never will be. Ashwin is a phenomenal bowler, and I am genuinely happy for his achievements. Whatever was meant to be mine, I got, and he has earned what was in his destiny,” Harbhajan added.

Vocal About Indian Pitches, Not Players

Harbhajan also highlighted that his criticism of Indian pitches has been misconstrued as a personal issue with Ashwin. “I have always been vocal about the nature of Indian pitches, which often favor spinners heavily and lead to matches ending in two or three days,” he said.

“Some on social media have twisted this and assumed I have an issue with Ashwin, but that’s not true. My opinion is about the conditions, not any individual. Playing for India is a huge achievement, and I respect all my colleagues, younger or older,” Harbhajan explained.

Comparing the Legends

While Ashwin amassed 765 wickets across 379 innings in his international career, Harbhajan took 707 wickets in 442 innings. Both spinners have been instrumental in India’s success and are widely regarded as icons of Indian cricket.

Mutual Respect and Legacy

Harbhajan emphasized the mutual respect he shares with Ashwin. “These players are not just colleagues but like brothers. I have no ill feelings toward anyone, and I respect their contributions to Indian cricket,” he concluded.

As Ashwin steps into retirement, the Indian cricketing fraternity reflects on his extraordinary achievements, with Harbhajan among the many acknowledging his immense impact on the game.
