New Delhi: Renowned Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket following the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Although stepping away from the international stage, the 38-year-old confirmed his plans to continue playing domestic and franchise cricket, including representing the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL.

Ashwin returned to his hometown Chennai on Thursday morning, where he was greeted by his family and fans. Speaking about his decision, Ashwin described his retirement as an instinctive choice that brought him a deep sense of relief and fulfillment.
An Emotional Farewell
“It’s an emotional moment for many, and perhaps the reality will sink in later,” Ashwin shared. “But for me, it’s a moment of immense satisfaction. It was a decision I had been contemplating for some time, and on Day 4 of the third Test, I just felt it was the right time.”
Ashwin leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, finishing his career with 765 international wickets across formats. In Test cricket, he is India’s second-highest wicket-taker, amassing 537 dismissals in 106 matches. His 37 five-wicket hauls are second only to the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, who achieved the feat 67 times.
A Hero’s Welcome in Chennai
Ashwin received a heartwarming welcome upon his arrival in Chennai. As he entered his home, he was embraced by his parents and garlanded by well-wishers. Reflecting on the reception, he said, “I never expected such a turnout. I was looking forward to a quiet return, but this gesture has truly made my day. The last time I experienced something like this was after the 2011 World Cup.”
Career Highlights
Ashwin’s illustrious career includes significant contributions to India’s success in limited-overs cricket. He was an integral part of the teams that won the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Over his 14-year white-ball career, he played 116 ODIs, taking 156 wickets, and featured in 65 T20Is, claiming 72 wickets.
Reflecting on his journey, Ashwin remarked, “In every career, there are challenges. When I think back, I cherish memories of taking wickets and contributing runs. But over the last two years, those memories have faded, signaling it was time to explore a different path.”
Continuing His Cricket Journey
Despite retiring from international cricket, Ashwin remains committed to playing domestic and franchise cricket. He confirmed his intention to play for CSK in the IPL and possibly feature in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL).
“I believe there’s still fire left in me to play. I’ll continue with CSK, and who knows, I might play as long as I can,” he stated. “Ashwin the Indian cricketer has stepped aside, but Ashwin the cricketer isn’t done yet.”
Looking Ahead
Ashwin’s departure marks the end of an era in Indian cricket. His contributions, both as a bowler and as a player, have left an indelible mark on the game. As he embarks on this new chapter, fans can look forward to watching him weave his magic in domestic and league cricket.
