Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on Ravichandran Ashwin’s unexpected retirement during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, attributing the decision to a combination of dwindling opportunities and a potential loss of motivation. Ashwin, India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, announced his retirement after the drawn third Test in Brisbane, leaving fans and experts speculating about the reasons behind his decision.

Gavaskar: Ashwin Saw Limited Future Opportunities
In an interview with India Today, Gavaskar pointed out that India’s upcoming Test schedule, which includes no home matches until mid-2025, may have influenced Ashwin’s decision. With India’s next Test assignment being a five-match series in England, Gavaskar suggested that Ashwin might have anticipated limited chances to feature in the playing XI, given his reduced role in overseas Tests in recent years.
“It was expected,” Gavaskar said. “India doesn’t have any home games lined up soon, and the next big series is in England. Ashwin, who has been a phenomenal player for India, likely realized he might not be selected, as he hasn’t been a consistent pick in the XI for overseas tours to South Africa, Australia, and England.”
A Stellar Career with Limited Overseas Exposure
Ashwin’s career has been nothing short of remarkable, with 537 wickets in 106 Test matches at an impressive average of 24. His dominance on home soil includes record-breaking strike rates and numerous five-wicket hauls. However, his overseas opportunities have been limited, with only 26 Tests played in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries, yielding 72 wickets at an average of 39.55.
Did Ashwin Aim to Surpass Kumble’s Record?
With 765 international wickets across formats, Ashwin stands as India’s second-highest wicket-taker behind Anil Kumble, who has 956. While many believed Ashwin could eventually break Kumble’s Test record, Gavaskar questioned whether the veteran off-spinner had the mental drive to continue pursuing such milestones.
“He could have achieved it, no doubt. But the question is, did he have the hunger for it? Taking wickets and achieving milestones requires a strong mental drive, and perhaps Ashwin felt that was fading,” Gavaskar speculated.
Rohit Sharma’s Insights on Ashwin’s Frame of Mind
Adding to the discussion, India captain Rohit Sharma revealed during a post-match press conference that Ashwin needed convincing to play the second Test in Adelaide, suggesting the bowler’s mental state might not have been fully aligned with the rigors of international cricket.
“When someone with over 500 wickets isn’t selected regularly, it’s bound to hurt. Ashwin is a player with immense pride in his performance, and that sense of being overlooked may have played a role in his decision,” Gavaskar explained.
A Legacy Beyond Numbers
Despite the circumstances surrounding his retirement, Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket remain unparalleled. His ability to turn games with both ball and bat, especially in home conditions, solidifies his place among the legends of the sport. As India moves forward, Ashwin’s absence will undoubtedly leave a void, but his legacy will inspire future generations.
