Rain Looms Over India vs. Australia Gabba Test Day 1

December 13, 2024

The third Test of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scheduled at Brisbane’s Gabba, faces the potential disruption of rain on its opening day. Both teams have claimed dominant victories in the first two matches of the series, setting the stage for an eagerly anticipated clash. However, weather conditions might play a significant role in the proceedings.

Weather Uncertainty at the Gabba

According to AccuWeather, there is an 88% chance of rain on Day 1, casting doubt over a timely start to the match. While the forecast improves slightly for the rest of the match, rain interruptions are still possible. Day 2 is predicted to see only a morning shower with high humidity, but Days 3 and 4 carry a 65% chance of rain, which could further affect the game.

India Eyeing Another Historic Gabba Performance

The Gabba holds special significance for India, as it was the site of their historic victory in 2021. That win marked India’s second consecutive series triumph in Australia and broke Australia’s unbeaten streak at the venue, which had lasted since 1988 when Viv Richards’ West Indies secured a win there.

Unlike the previous series, which consisted of four Tests, the current Border-Gavaskar Trophy spans five matches. India opened their campaign with a massive 295-run win in Perth, but Australia leveled the series with a commanding 10-wicket victory in the pink-ball Test at Adelaide. The Gabba now serves as the midway point of this gripping series.

Hazlewood to Replace Boland in Australia’s Line-Up

Australia captain Pat Cummins has confirmed that fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will return to the playing XI at the Gabba, replacing Scott Boland. Boland, despite a stellar five-wicket haul in Adelaide, will make way for Hazlewood’s experience and skill.

“It’s a tough call,” said Cummins. “Scotty was fantastic in Adelaide, but he’s spent a lot of time on the sidelines over the past 18 months. Whenever he plays, he delivers brilliantly. There’s still a lot of cricket left in this series, and I’m sure he’ll get another opportunity.”

With the series tied and the weather threatening to disrupt play, both teams face an uphill task as they aim to seize control in Brisbane. Fans will hope the rain stays away, allowing the cricket to take center stage in what promises to be another memorable chapter in this storied rivalry.
