Mumbai Indians Appoint Carl Hopkinson as New Fielding Coach for IPL 2025

December 13, 2024

Mumbai Indians (MI) have revamped their coaching staff ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, bringing in renowned English fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. Hopkinson will replace James Pamment, who had been part of the team’s setup since 2018. This move comes as the franchise aims to bounce back after a disappointing 10th-place finish in the 2024 season.

Hopkinson Joins a Rejuvenated Coaching Setup

Carl Hopkinson brings a wealth of experience to Mumbai Indians. He has been an integral part of England’s white-ball coaching team during one of their most successful periods, contributing to their ODI World Cup victory in 2019 and their T20 World Cup triumph in 2022. His expertise in fielding and his track record with elite teams make him a valuable addition to MI’s backroom staff.

Joining Hopkinson is Mahela Jayawardene, who returns as head coach. The Sri Lankan legend previously led MI to three IPL titles and has been brought back to revive the franchise’s fortunes. Jayawardene will also continue working alongside MI stalwarts Keiron Pollard and Lasith Malinga, who will remain as batting and bowling coaches, respectively.

Departure of James Pamment and Mark Boucher

James Pamment’s tenure with MI spanned six years, during which he played a key role in the team’s title wins in 2019 and 2020. However, the franchise has opted for a change, citing the need for a fresh approach after a string of lackluster seasons between 2022 and 2024.

Mark Boucher, who served as head coach for the past two seasons, has also parted ways with the team. In his place, Jayawardene brings both familiarity and a proven track record as MI prepares for a new chapter.

A Balanced Squad for 2025

Despite their struggles in recent seasons, Mumbai Indians enter IPL 2025 with a strong squad. Hardik Pandya will lead the team, which boasts seasoned Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and the promising Tilak Varma.

In the auction, MI secured impactful overseas players, including Trent Boult and Will Jacks, while also planning for the future with the acquisition of Afghanistan’s mystery spinner, Allah Ghazanfar.

Road Ahead for Mumbai Indians

With the return of Jayawardene, the addition of Hopkinson, and the retention of several star players, MI is setting its sights on reclaiming their position as IPL contenders. The franchise is banking on this refreshed coaching team to reignite their winning culture and bring the trophy back to Mumbai.
