Ex-India Cricketer Seen in Poor Health at Memorial Event

Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli’s recent public appearance has sparked concern among his fans and former teammates. The once-dominant batsman, who attended the Ramakant Achrekar Memorial event organized by his close friend Sachin Tendulkar, appeared visibly unwell. Struggling to stand and speak clearly, Kambli’s condition has left many worried about his health and well-being.

At the event, Tendulkar and other attendees, including former India wicketkeeper Sameer Dighe, were visibly moved by Kambli’s frail state. Dighe, who shares a long history with Kambli, expressed his heartbreak upon seeing his friend in such a condition.

“I met him after so many years. He hugged me and called out, ‘Samya.’ I couldn’t bear to see him like this. It brought tears to my eyes. We’ve played together for 14 years in Mumbai cricket, and I pray for his good health,” Dighe told The Times of India.

Although Kambli and Dighe did not play for India together—Dighe debuted in 2000, a year after Kambli’s international career ended—the two were integral to Mumbai’s success in domestic cricket during the 1990s. Alongside Tendulkar, they formed the backbone of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy-winning teams.

Kambli’s Challenges: Financial Struggles and Health Concerns

Vinod Kambli, who represented India in 17 Tests and 104 ODIs, has faced significant challenges in his post-cricket life. After battling alcohol addiction and financial troubles, he seemed to find stability through a coaching stint at Tendulkar’s cricket academy in Mumbai. However, in 2022, Kambli publicly revealed that his financial situation was dire, with his only income being a ₹30,000 monthly pension from the BCCI.

“I am a retired cricketer, entirely dependent on the BCCI pension. That money supports my family, and I am deeply grateful for it,” Kambli said in an interview with Mid-Day.

He also expressed a desire to take up coaching assignments to share his experience with young cricketers. “I am eager to contribute to Mumbai cricket, whether at Wankhede or BKC. Mumbai cricket has given me everything, and I owe my life to the game,” he added.

Despite his efforts to seek opportunities through the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), little progress has been made in the last two years. In August, a viral video showing Kambli struggling to get off a bike raised concerns about his health. His recent appearance at the memorial event has further confirmed that he is not doing well.

A Career That Promised Much

Kambli’s career, though short-lived, was filled with promise. He was once regarded as one of India’s most flamboyant and talented batters. However, his cricketing journey was cut short by inconsistent performances and injuries. His final appearance for India was in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2000.

Today, the cricketing fraternity and fans hope that Kambli receives the support he needs to regain his health and stability. His contributions to Indian cricket, especially in partnership with Tendulkar during their early years, remain etched in history.
