“You’re a Legend, But You’re Old”: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Cheeky Banter with Nathan Lyon

December 5, 2024

Australia’s veteran spinner Nathan Lyon recently shared a humorous on-field exchange with India’s emerging star Yashasvi Jaiswal during the first Test in Perth. Jaiswal, who scored a magnificent maiden Test century in the match, playfully teased Lyon about his age while the seasoned bowler was in action.

A Friendly Sledge from Jaiswal

Lyon, who has 532 wickets in 130 Test matches, is widely regarded as one of Australia’s greatest spinners. Reflecting on the light-hearted moment, Lyon revealed that Jaiswal had called him “a legend, but old” after the young batter crossed the century mark.

“He was on about 120 when he said it to me,” Lyon shared on SEN Radio. “It was all in good fun.”

Jaiswal’s Dominant Century

Jaiswal’s brilliant knock of 160 in challenging conditions was pivotal to India’s 295-run victory. The 21-year-old played with confidence and flair, helping India post a commanding 487/6 declared in their second innings. His innings showcased his ability to handle both pace and spin, as he comfortably tackled Australia’s experienced bowling attack.

India’s former captain Virat Kohli also made headlines with a composed century in the same innings, marking the end of his long wait for a Test hundred.

Banter with Starc Adds to the Drama

Jaiswal wasn’t done with his banter after Lyon. Earlier in the match, he had an amusing exchange with Australian pacer Mitchell Starc. After lofting Starc for a boundary, Jaiswal cheekily remarked, “You’re coming too slow at me,” leaving the bowler chuckling.

A Breakthrough Performance

Jaiswal’s confident batting and playful interactions highlighted his maturity and composure, despite being relatively new to international cricket. His ability to perform against a formidable Australian side, coupled with his fearless banter, has endeared him to fans and set the tone for the rest of the series.

Looking Ahead to Adelaide

As the series shifts to Adelaide for the second Test under the lights, Jaiswal will aim to build on his stellar performance. With the pink ball in play and Australia looking to bounce back, the stage is set for another thrilling encounter. All eyes will be on the young Indian opener as he continues to make his mark in Test cricket.
