India’s aspirations to reach the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final received a significant boost following New Zealand’s slow over-rate penalty during their Test series against England. The development comes as the 2023-2025 WTC cycle approaches its final stages, with multiple teams, including India, vying for a spot in the prestigious final at Lord’s in June 2025.

India’s Steady Climb in the WTC Rankings
After a 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand, India faced an uphill battle to secure a place in the summit clash. However, recent performances under stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah have turned the tide. India’s commanding 295-run victory over Australia in Perth pushed their points percentage (PCT) above 60 in the WTC standings, keeping them firmly in contention.
The latest development provides further momentum for regular captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir as they aim for a flawless finish in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
New Zealand Penalized for Slow Over-Rate
New Zealand’s WTC campaign suffered a significant blow after being penalized for maintaining a slow over-rate during the first Test against England in Christchurch. The BlackCaps and England were both docked three WTC points and fined 15% of their match fees.
Captains Tom Latham and Ben Stokes accepted the penalties after being charged by umpires Ahsan Raza, Rod Tucker, Adrian Holdstock, and Kim Cotton. The penalties, imposed under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, highlight the importance of adhering to minimum over-rate regulations.
ICC Rules on Over-Rate Offenses
As per ICC regulations, teams are fined 5% of their match fee for every over they fall short of the target, with an additional penalty of one WTC point per over. The penalties have further complicated New Zealand’s path to the final, as the BlackCaps also suffered an eight-wicket defeat to England in Christchurch.
India’s Path to the WTC Final
India now sits atop the WTC standings with a PCT of 61.11, followed by South Africa and Australia. To secure their place in the final without depending on other results, India needs a 4-0 clean sweep in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
