Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja has called for patience and fairness toward Gautam Gambhir as Team India’s head coach, urging fans and critics not to judge him prematurely. Gambhir, who took over the coaching reins from Rahul Dravid earlier this year, has faced criticism following India’s series loss to New Zealand at home. However, the pressure eased slightly after India’s emphatic 295-run victory against Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“Too Early to Judge Gambhir,” Says Jadeja
Speaking to the media, Jadeja described the backlash against Gambhir as “unfair,” emphasizing the limited time the coach has had to make an impact.
“I think you are being unfair to him. Judging someone based on a series or two is not reasonable. He has just started this role, and it is too early to evaluate his work,” Jadeja said.
Jadeja further stated that Gambhir’s coaching journey is still in its infancy, and ups and downs are part of any coach’s tenure.
“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It’s all part of the process. Judging him in just six months is not the right approach,” he added.
Gambhir’s Early Challenges as Head Coach
Gambhir, a key figure in India’s 2011 World Cup-winning campaign, stepped into the role after India’s triumph in the T20 World Cup. His tenure began with a historic ODI series loss to Sri Lanka, marking the first time in 27 years India had been defeated in such fashion. This was followed by a clean sweep by New Zealand in a home Test series, raising questions about his suitability as an all-format coach.
However, Jadeja defended Gambhir’s no-nonsense approach, noting that his straightforward personality has always been a hallmark of his career.
“You knew what you were getting with Gambhir. He is a clear-cut person, and his methods have always been consistent. What he is doing now is exactly what was expected,” said Jadeja.
India’s Remarkable Victory Against Australia
India’s fortunes took a positive turn in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The team, under stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, secured a massive victory in the first Test at Perth’s Optus Stadium, despite missing key players like Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Bumrah led by example, claiming eight wickets in the match, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings.
India’s regular skipper Rohit Sharma, who missed the first Test due to family commitments, is set to return for the second Test in Adelaide, a pink-ball fixture. Jadeja believes Rohit’s comeback will further strengthen the team.
“Rohit is a natural leader. When the team was struggling, he stepped up, and now, as the team gains momentum, his presence will only enhance their confidence,” Jadeja concluded.
With Gambhir’s coaching stint still in its early days, the focus now shifts to the second Test as India aims to extend their lead in the five-match series.
