Delhi Capitals (DC) have finalized their squad for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), securing KL Rahul as one of their marquee signings for INR 14 crore at the recent auction. Despite Rahul being considered a prime candidate for the captaincy, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has suggested Axar Patel as the ideal leader for the franchise.
Axar Patel’s Case for Captaincy
Axar Patel, retained by DC ahead of the mega auction, has been a consistent performer and a key figure in the Capitals’ setup for several years. Chopra argued that Axar’s maturity, all-round abilities, and respect within the dressing room make him a strong contender to lead the team.
“If I were given the choice, I’d make Axar Patel the captain. He is an underrated, mature, and fantastic performer who can lead the team effectively. Axar commands respect, and he is someone who can run the side efficiently,” Chopra said while analyzing the Capitals’ options.
KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis in Contention
While Chopra acknowledged KL Rahul’s leadership potential and Faf du Plessis as another viable option, he leaned heavily towards Axar due to the latter’s performances on DC’s home ground.
“KL Rahul is a strong candidate, and Faf du Plessis could be another option. However, Faf might not start in the playing XI since DC used the Right to Match (RTM) card for Jake Fraser-McGurk. Given this, Axar stands out due to his exceptional consistency for the franchise,” he explained.
Rishabh Pant’s Departure
The Capitals made headlines by exercising the RTM card for former skipper Rishabh Pant at INR 21 crore during the auction. However, Lucknow Super Giants escalated the bidding to INR 27 crore, forcing DC to release their long-time star. Pant, who joined DC in 2016, had been an integral part of the team and its leadership group.
Following Pant’s departure, DC shifted focus to acquiring KL Rahul, successfully outbidding franchises like Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders for the star batter.
What Lies Ahead for Delhi Capitals
The Capitals now face a crucial decision in selecting their next leader. With Chopra’s endorsement of Axar Patel and Rahul’s established credentials, the franchise’s management has a unique dilemma. While Axar’s familiarity with the team and all-round capabilities make him a natural fit, Rahul’s international experience and prior captaincy stints bring their own advantages.
Regardless of the choice, DC will look to rebuild and compete for their maiden IPL title in the upcoming season.
