Yashasvi Jaiswal’s extraordinary year continued with a commanding century in his maiden Test match in Australia. The 22-year-old scored a brilliant 161 in the second innings, helping India secure a dominant 295-run victory over Australia at the Perth Stadium, a venue where no team had beaten Australia in a Test before. Former India head coach Rahul Dravid, who has been a key mentor to Jaiswal, expressed admiration for the young batter’s rapid growth and immense potential.

A Knock to Remember
After a disappointing duck in the first innings, Jaiswal demonstrated resilience and skill, crafting a knock that transitioned seamlessly through gears. His innings not only anchored India’s performance but also underscored his adaptability and hunger for success at the highest level.
Speaking on Star Sports, Dravid lauded Jaiswal’s rapid progression. “It’s incredible to think that just a year and a half ago, he made his debut in the West Indies. To perform like this in your first Test in Australia, especially in Perth, is a testament to his hunger, desire, and skill,” said Dravid.
A Promising Start
Dravid, who was India’s head coach when Jaiswal debuted in Dominica against the West Indies, recalled the batter’s remarkable start. In his debut Test, Jaiswal scored 171 off 387 balls, forming key partnerships with Rohit Sharma (229 runs) and Virat Kohli (110 runs). Since then, the left-hander has gone from strength to strength, becoming a vital part of India’s batting lineup.
Dravid, now coaching Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, where Jaiswal also plays, believes the young batter’s journey is just beginning. “To achieve what he did in his first Test in Australia is rare. With his hunger and drive, he will only continue to improve,” Dravid added.
A Stellar Year for Jaiswal
Jaiswal’s century in Perth was his third this year and fourth overall in Test cricket. He has accumulated 1,280 runs in 23 Test innings this year alone, averaging an impressive 58.18. His overall Test career now boasts 1,568 runs at an average of 58.07 in just 15 matches.
The young batter has also shone in the T20I format, scoring 723 runs in 23 matches at a strike rate of 164.11 and an average of 36.15, with five half-centuries and a century to his name.
Future Bright for Jaiswal
As Jaiswal continues to break records and make history, Dravid’s confidence in his protégé remains steadfast. “Performing in Australia, especially in conditions like Perth, shows his character. He is on a journey of constant improvement, and this is just the beginning,” Dravid concluded.
Jaiswal’s performances this year have solidified his reputation as one of India’s brightest young talents, and his remarkable rise promises a future filled with even greater achievements.
