Urvil Patel Smashes Record-Breaking T20 Century Days After Going Unsold in IPL Auction

November 28, 2024

Despite being overlooked in the IPL 2025 auction, wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel showcased his immense talent with a blistering century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) match in Indore. Patel smashed an incredible 113 off just 35 balls, hammering seven fours and 12 sixes. His 28-ball century is now the fastest by an Indian in T20 cricket and the second-fastest overall in the format’s history.

Patel’s Unstoppable Form
This isn’t the first time Patel has lit up domestic cricket with his batting heroics. In 2023, he scored an unbeaten 100 off just 41 balls in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match, which became the second-fastest century by an Indian in List A cricket. His recent SMAT ton reinforces his reputation as one of India’s most explosive batters.

Despite going unsold in the IPL auction held in Jeddah, Patel remained unfazed. “I did expect a deal, to be very honest. But I am happy that I am playing, performing, and improving my game. Watching the auction, I quickly moved on and shifted my focus to my cricket,” Patel shared in an interview with Times of India. The Gujarat player had been part of the Gujarat Titans squad last season, bought for ₹20 lakhs.

Inspiration from Suryakumar Yadav
Patel also credited India’s star batter Suryakumar Yadav for inspiring his fearless approach. Recalling their interaction during the IPL, Patel said, “I told Surya bhai that I admire him, and he was very encouraging. He told me, ‘Play fearlessly. Watch the ball carefully, but also observe the bowler—their action, hand, and finger movements. Always back yourself.’” Patel revealed that Yadav’s advice had a lasting impact on his mindset, helping him maintain confidence regardless of the bowler he faces.

A Record to Remember
While Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan holds the record for the fastest T20 century, achieved off 27 balls against Cyprus in 2024, Patel’s knock cements his place among the world’s elite. His incredible innings powered Gujarat to a dominant eight-wicket win over Tripura, further solidifying his status as a rising star in Indian cricket.

Patel’s performances continue to underscore the depth of talent in domestic cricket, proving that opportunities extend beyond the IPL stage.
