Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane Shine in SMAT; Shami Struggles Against Mizoram

November 28, 2024

Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer continued his red-hot form in domestic cricket with another explosive innings during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) match against Maharashtra on Wednesday. Iyer smashed a blistering 71 off just 39 balls, featuring eight fours and three sixes, at an impressive strike rate of 182.05. His knock, combined with Ajinkya Rahane’s solid 52 off 34 balls (three fours and three sixes), guided Mumbai to chase down a 172-run target in just 17.1 overs.

Maharashtra’s Struggle with the Bat
Batting first, Maharashtra managed 171/9 in 20 overs despite being in deep trouble at 75/6 at one stage. Crucial contributions from Nikhil Naik and Azim Kazi helped them reach a respectable total. Tanush Kotian was Mumbai’s standout bowler, taking 3/21 in three overs.

Iyer’s Heroics Against Goa
Earlier in the tournament, Iyer delivered a remarkable unbeaten 130 off 57 balls against Goa, including 11 fours and 10 sixes, at a staggering strike rate of 228.07. His sensational knock powered Mumbai to 250/4 in their 20 overs, setting up a 26-run victory.

A Triumphant Comeback for Iyer
Shreyas Iyer’s recent performances mark a resurgence after facing challenges in his career, including injuries, poor Test form, and being omitted from the BCCI’s central contract list. The middle-order batter has made a statement with his consistent domestic displays, including leading Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy title last season and guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their first IPL title in a decade.

After a disappointing run in the Buchi Babu Tournament, Iyer bounced back in the Duleep Trophy, scoring 154 runs across three matches, including two half-centuries. He also contributed to Mumbai’s Irani Cup triumph with scores of 57 and 8.

Shami Goes Wicketless Against Mizoram
Meanwhile, India’s senior pacer Mohammed Shami had a rare off day against Mizoram in another SMAT fixture, failing to pick up a wicket. Despite Shami’s struggles, the focus remains on the outstanding performances of Iyer and Rahane, who continue to dominate the domestic circuit.

These performances highlight Iyer’s determination and readiness to make a strong case for his return to the Indian team, reaffirming his status as one of the top domestic talents in the country.
