Mikyle Louis Targets 400-Run Total After Solid Start Against Bangladesh

November 23, 2024

North Sound, Antigua – West Indies batter Mikyle Louis expressed optimism about his team’s first-innings prospects after a steady performance on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh. Despite an early setback, a crucial partnership between Louis and Alick Athanaze helped stabilize the innings, putting the hosts in a promising position at the close of play.

Recovery After Early Wickets

Opting to bat first, the West Indies faced challenging conditions on a pitch offering early moisture. The openers initially handled the swing and seam well, but quick strikes by Bangladesh’s bowlers left the hosts struggling at 84/3.

Louis (97) and Athanaze (90) then stitched together a vital 140-run stand for the fourth wicket, steering their side out of trouble. Their partnership provided a strong platform for the middle order, as the West Indies reached 250/5 by stumps, with Justin Greaves and Joshua Da Silva unbeaten at the crease.

Louis Reflects on Key Partnership

Although he narrowly missed his maiden Test century, Louis remained upbeat about the team’s chances of crossing the 400-run mark. “We’re in a good position right now with Justin and Joshua at the crease. If they can build a solid partnership, 400-plus is definitely achievable,” Louis said, as quoted by the ICC.

The 24-year-old highlighted the importance of his stand with Athanaze in turning the tide. “The conditions early on were tough, with some moisture in the pitch making it slow and offering movement. Alick’s experience was invaluable; he guided me throughout the partnership,” Louis noted.

Learning from the Innings

Despite his disappointment at falling three runs short of a century, Louis focused on the positives and his plans for the second innings. “I’m aiming for three figures in the next innings,” he said. “I looked for opportunities to play short-pitched deliveries, and every time the ball was in my zone, I felt confident to pull it.”

Looking Ahead to Day 2

With a solid foundation laid, the West Indies will aim to capitalize on their position and build a substantial first-innings total. Greaves and Da Silva, unbeaten at the crease, hold the key to driving the team closer to the 400-run target that Louis believes is within reach.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will look to take early wickets on Day 2 and restrict the hosts from running away with the game. As the series opener unfolds, the battle between the bat and ball promises to intensify.
