Sanju Samson Opens Up After Stunning Century Against South Africa

November 16, 2024

India’s dominant batting display in the fourth T20I against South Africa was highlighted by Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma’s sensational centuries, making them the first duo to score hundreds in the same innings of a Full Member T20I match. Their efforts powered India to a massive total of 283/1, breaking multiple records and sealing a 3-1 series victory in Johannesburg.

Samson, who has been in scintillating form, scored his second century of the series and third in just five matches. Reflecting on his performance, he shared an emotional perspective on overcoming challenges and failures to contribute to the team’s success.

Overcoming Challenges and Delivering for India

Speaking to broadcasters after the match, Samson said, “It’s hard to express my emotions right now as I’m still catching my breath. I’ve faced so many failures in my life—scored two centuries but also had two ducks recently. I just kept believing in myself, kept working hard, and it all came together today.”

Samson credited his early partnership with Abhishek Sharma, which yielded 73 runs, for setting the stage. He also praised Tilak Varma, with whom he shared a record-breaking 210-run stand, the highest partnership in T20I history for any wicket. “Abhishek gave me good support early on, and Tilak played an exceptional knock. It’s a pleasure to bat alongside someone so talented,” he added.

Tilak Varma: A Star in the Making

Samson heaped praise on Tilak Varma, who smashed 10 sixes during his innings and seems to have cemented the number three spot. “Tilak is an extraordinary talent and the future of Indian cricket. We’ve had so many great partnerships, and today was no exception,” Samson said.

Staying Grounded Amid Success

The Rajasthan Royals skipper emphasized the importance of staying grounded and focusing on the process. “I don’t like to talk too much about my performances—last time I did, I ended up with a couple of ducks. My focus is on keeping things simple and contributing to the team’s goals,” he said.

Samson also acknowledged the role of captain Suryakumar Yadav in motivating the team. “Our captain had clear expectations from us, and we’re happy we could deliver on them,” he added.

A Remarkable Year for Indian T20 Cricket

India concluded 2024 with an extraordinary record in T20Is, securing 24 wins and suffering only two losses, including a historic unbeaten World Cup campaign. The emphatic victory over South Africa marked a fitting end to their stellar year in the shortest format.

While fans will have to wait until 2025 to see India in T20Is again, players like Samson and Tilak have set the stage for what promises to be another exciting chapter in Indian cricket.
