Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir Face Intense Review with BCCI Leadership Following Loss to New Zealand

November 9, 2024

Following India’s recent 0-3 Test series defeat to New Zealand on home soil, the BCCI conducted a six-hour review meeting to address issues impacting the team’s performance. The meeting included skipper Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir (who joined online), chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, and BCCI President Roger Binny. According to PTI, the discussion aimed to identify areas of concern and ensure the team regains momentum as they prepare for their upcoming Australia tour.

A key point of discussion reportedly centered around Gambhir’s coaching style, which contrasts with that of former coach Rahul Dravid. Gambhir’s approach has introduced new dynamics within the team, and while it may have long-term benefits, the transition has presented some challenges. Although it remains unclear if Gambhir’s methods were directly questioned, sources suggest that members within the management raised concerns about the adjustments required from players.

The meeting also scrutinized specific tactical choices made during the series, such as the decision to rest vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah for the third Test, despite his status as India’s leading fast bowler. Another point of contention was the selection of a rank-turner pitch for the Mumbai Test after a similar surface in Pune had caused difficulties. The board sought clarification on the rationale behind these choices in a high-stakes series.

Team selection also came under scrutiny, particularly the inclusion of players like T20 specialist all-rounder Nitish Reddy and young pacer Harshit Rana, who have limited experience in the Ranji Trophy. According to sources, these selections were “not unanimous,” suggesting differing opinions among selectors.

As India prepares for the Australia tour, the BCCI has set expectations for cohesive efforts from Gambhir, Rohit, and Agarkar to address these issues and enhance team performance. The board has requested input on refining selection standards and improving decision-making processes to prevent similar challenges in the future.
