July 12, 2024

India claimed the T20 World Cup title after a 17-year gap with a thrilling victory over South Africa. Former cricketer VVS Laxman lauded the team’s tenacity and coach Rahul Dravid’s emotional celebration. The win also marked the T20I retirement of key players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. Laxman highlighted Dravid’s rare public display of emotion during the victory celebrations.

Historic Win in Barbados

On June 29, Rohit Sharma led India to a remarkable 7-run victory against South Africa in the final held in Barbados. The triumph sparked widespread celebrations across India, marking the nation’s first ICC global trophy win in 11 years and their second T20 World Cup title after 17 years. VVS Laxman, reflecting on the achievement, praised the team’s resilience in securing the win under immense pressure.

Unyielding Spirit and Team Resilience

Laxman commended the Indian team’s incredible fightback when South Africa needed just 30 runs from 30 balls. “The character, resilience, and self-belief shown by the team to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat was remarkable,” Laxman said in a video shared by the BCCI on its ‘X’ handle. He emphasized that the celebrations by players and support staff revealed the hard work and dedication behind the win.

Emotional Victory Celebrations

Laxman, currently leading the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and coaching Team India in Zimbabwe, observed the emotional celebrations as a testament to the significance of the victory for every player and staff member. “Winning the World Cup is a special feeling, especially against the best teams. The emotions displayed by the players and support staff showed how much this victory meant to everyone involved,” Laxman noted, mentioning Hardik Pandya’s emotional reaction after delivering the final ball and Rohit Sharma’s elation on the ground.

Rahul Dravid’s Rare Emotional Display

Laxman paid special attention to Rahul Dravid’s emotional celebration, highlighting it as a rare public display for the usually reserved coach. “Seeing Rahul show such emotion, especially when lifting the trophy handed over by Rohit and Virat, was a powerful moment. It underscored the deep significance of the victory for him and the entire team,” Laxman remarked, recalling their shared history, including a memorable Test win against Australia in 2001.

Tributes to Retiring Legends

Laxman also honored the contributions of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, who announced their retirement from T20Is following the World Cup win. “These stalwarts have immensely contributed to Indian cricket and set a remarkable example for future generations. Their passion and pride in representing India are truly exemplary. While they have retired from this format, I am confident they will continue to bring glory to the country in other formats,” Laxman concluded.
